Welcome to St. Nicolas church. We are a growing church with a friendly congregation. We worship in an ancient 13th century building set in beautiful grounds. Our main service is on a Sunday at 10.30am and there is always a social time after the service for coffee and a chat. We support fair trade a local foodbank and other charities. Our church is very popular with wedding couples and baptism families and we give a warm welcome to all our visitors. We have events throughout the year as part of our community life together.

Public Services have now resumed at St Nicolas'.

You can donate items at:

St Michael’s on Saturdays 10-12

St Nicolas' on Tuesday morning between 10 & 10.30 at the lay-by in front of the Church.

For urgent matters please contact the clergy.

Historical notes
The Church seats about 160 people and is usually open throughout the day. It was built around 1200 and extended in the 13th Century. The chancel, nave and aisles date back to the 14th Century. There are fragments of medieval stained glass with coats of arms in the chancel north window and the north aisle east window. There are also two commemorative 15th-16th Century brasses.

The tower dates to the 14th and 15th Centuries and on the outside of the tower, towards the top, there are gargoyles and a blue clock which faces east, and is dated 1806. The Church has a Tudor-arched west door. The clerestorey and the north west aisle window are from the late 18th Century.

Like the rest of the Church building, the font, organ and pulpit are still used today. The font is from the 14th-15th Century and is octagonal with cusped panels and shields. St Nicolas’ shield (blue with three gold balls, possibly to represent the three bags of money St Nicolas gave away) is on the front. The organ and organ loft is to the back of the church and has a 19th Century railed gallery. The pulpit is from the 19th Century.Like the rest of the Church building, the font, organ and pulpit are still used today. The font is from the 14th-15th Century and is octagonal with cusped panels and shields.

Some rebuilding and restoration occurred more recently, such as the nave roof being rebuilt in the 19th and 20th Centuries. When it was rebuilt it is possible that some of the original tie beams and carved bosses were reused. Also, the central section to the east side was rebuilt with a window in the early 1900’s. The window shows the letters ‘R S’ in wrought-iron, that is, the initials of Robert Sutton, the patron of the 19th Century restorations.

Keeping Safe

Most of the time at church we are like a big happy family. However even in very happy families people
can have a bad day and even people we know and trust can upset us. We want to help everyone have
good days all of the time. We try to make sure that people who have jobs in the church always behave
well and in a way that is helpful to you. We never want anyone or anything in church to frighten you,
confuse you or worry you. It is important that you tell us if something is upsetting you or if you are
feeling worried about something that's happening or something somebody is doing. We have specially
trained people who you can talk to and who you can ask for help. These people are good at
safeguarding. This means they look after everyone's safety. Caring for people is a very important part
of our Christian life.

The people who can help you are the parish priest or the parish safeguarding officer. You can contact
the safeguarding officer Christine Job (01472 239 846 or 07914 530 145) or the parish priest
Reverend Jenny Camm (01472 902 071). If you wish to speak to someone outside the church
you can contact the diocesan safeguarding team - their contact details are available here.

There is also information there about other places from where you can get help or advice.
