Welcome to St George’s church. We are a small congregation that meet on Sunday evenings in a beautiful ancient church set in lovely grounds. We hold nearly all our services on Sunday evenings to provide for those who work on Sunday mornings with an opportunity to worship. Our church is an ideal venue for small intimate summer weddings.

Services will not resume at St. George’s, Bradley until further notice.

Services have resumed at our sister churches as follows:

St Michael's - Sundays 10.30am; Wednesdays 10am

St Nicolas' - Sundays 10.30am

We will continue to Live-Stream services via our Facebook pages, the links can be viewed here.

Historical notes

St George's is an ancient church in a small village.  The Church is open around the time of our service, which is every Sunday evening at 6:00. It is a very small and very beautiful Church, with box pews and candles on the end of every pew. Much of this medieval Church is from the 13th Century. This is seen in features such as the piscina, the shallow basin for washing holy vessels, two of which are in the chancel. The tower however certainly has earlier Norman features, especially towards the base.

Nonetheless, much of the tower was actually built in the 13th Century, including the bell openings and the slit windows near the top.  The current tower however was completed  in the 15th Century.

The porch is from the 14th Century and inside the porch are stone bench seats.  The decorated octagonal font is also from the 14th Century.  It has a moulded pedestal and carved side panels bearing the inscription, "Pater noster, ave maria and criede leren ye chylde yt es nede", which reminds us that there is a need to teach children the prayers starting with ‘Our Father’ and ‘Hail Mary’ as well as the Creed. A north aisle was removed in the mid-late 1700’s.

The current roof, along with the box pews and panelling are all from the 19th Century. At the end of each pew is a tall carved poppy-head.  The two round-headed stained glass windows by Francis Skeat are from the 20th Century. The window in the north aisle is in memory of one of the Tickler family who lived in Bradley Manor at that time. The family made ‘Tickler’s Jams’ and the Latin phrase ‘I am’ has been deliberately written to look like ‘Jam’!

Keeping Safe
Most of the time at church we are like a big happy family. However even in very happy families people
can have a bad day and even people we know and trust can upset us. We want to help everyone have
good days all of the time. We try to make sure that people who have jobs in the church always behave
well and in a way that is helpful to you. We never want anyone or anything in church to frighten you,
confuse you or worry you. It is important that you tell us if something is upsetting you or if you are
feeling worried about something that's happening or something somebody is doing. We have specially
trained people who you can talk to and who you can ask for help. These people are good at
safeguarding. This means they look after everyone's safety. Caring for people is a very important part
of our Christian life.

The people who can help you are the parish priest or the parish safeguarding officer. You can contact
the safeguarding officer Christine Job  (01472 239 846 or 07914 530 145) or the parish priest
Rev'd Jenny Camm (01472 902 071). If you wish to speak to someone outside the church
you can contact the diocesan safeguarding team - their contact details are available here.

There is also information there about other places from where you can get help or advice.
